Running....

I've hit the 3 mile mark again. After not running for a year, it took 3 weeks to be back to this level.

Now for the purists out there, you may not think the elliptical is running. I would disagree. It's running made better as it takes out the pounding my joints would take. I want to be fit, be healthy, and get rid of my extra weight, which remains plentiful for now. Since when running your heel hits the ground with 3 G's, my extra 130# is 390# on my weight bearing joints. The elliptical lets me run without that. If and when I get to 185 I'll consider running on open ground, but given the damage the psoriatic arthritis did, maybe, maybe not.

I'm determined to get back to the weight loss that stopped and back slid in the year once work became untenable. I just didn't have the time to get to the gym while working 65-70 hours/week. Last year at Thanksgiving I weighed in the mid 280's, and things were slowly but deliberately heading south. In the year since, I've backslid somewhere between 25 & 30 of the 90 I had lost. I'm unsure exactly how much as the scales have already been packed & moved, plus I got different weights on every scale I stepped on whilst we were back east. Fortunately, I'm back to my local gym, and the two scales here correlate with the one I had in my office, which passed annual calibration testing for the past 30 years.

In any event according to the scale here in the locker I'm back to just 20# above a year ago. Moreover I'm feeling better. Yeah the muscles are a little sore, but underline little & it's sorta it hurts so good. I feel stronger. Stairs no longer have any challenge until after 3 stories.

So the plan is at least 4 trips to the gym weekly, with a minimum of 2.5 miles each visit. Anything above that for now is optional. Would icing on the cake be an appropriate metaphor?

There has been one annoying side effect. I'm down a pants size, in the last three weeks. I don't dare wear most of what I have without a belt or suspenders. Problem is all my smaller pants got packed and are somewhere in the new house or garage. I rummaged they my closet this morning and found 2 pair of jeans and 2 pair of overalls the next size down. As I'm trying to pare down what I own, I was definitely not buying anything new. All of what I found needed to be either hemmed or mended. That got done, and I now have things to wear without danger of "showtime"!

Enough naval gazing. Time to head for home.
