Yearly Meeting
Aug. 2nd, 2007 07:38 pmHave been away for the week at our religious groups annual gathering, with husband and three children in tow. Our godchildren are 14, 5, 4 & 2, all girls and the oldest three are with us for the week, having a chance to be with other Quaker kids. I'm serving on the nominations committee, which in short has been rewarding, but a butt load of work. (gee, that just sounds so spiritual. It is in reality, at least for this Friend, but then some would say I have a major masochistic streak.)
Gay people aren't coming out of the closet, within our sect of Quakerism, but rather out of the woodwork. We aren't the only same gender couple in this gathering with children and as a result same are making the assumption they're ours full time. The middle girl has reddish hair, like her mother and like her uncle Weaver and I'm amused how many people have told me a) how adorable she is and b) how much she looks like me. I haven't had the heart to embarrass folks to their faces, so I simply respond, "Ya know, I don't see that. I really think she looks just like her mom. If she was here this week, I'm sure you'd agree."
We leave for home Saturday after lunch, and though I am very grateful for the time and space with Friends from throughout our Yearly Meeting, I will be grateful to leave the pollution her behind. The air here is horrid. We're less than 10 miles south of the tehachapes (sp?), they the mountains are difficult to make out in the haze of the smog blowing in from LA and the the other coastal communities. Next year we will gather in the woods of northern Marin, literally 45 minutes from home. I'm looking forward to that.
