Progress....
Feb. 17th, 2012 07:32 pmJust a couple of momentary thoughts, it's already after sundown, and I promised myself that I would light a yahrzeit candle for my grandmother tonight. (It's seven years that she's gone; were she still here, she'd be 115.)
I am emotionally buoyed by the turn of events in the past two weeks. It feels like more has happened for marriage equality this month than has ever happened in such a short period of time. The most recent round in the prop eight appeal confirmed Judge Walker's decision overturning prop eight. Washington state passed marriage equality, New Jersey's legislature voted for marriage equality, even though their governor vetoed it. This evening, Maryland's House of delegates passed a marriage equality bill, which will now go to their Senate, where it's also expected to pass, just as it did last year. It will then go to the governor, who has a ready said he will sign it.
Yes, I know that there will likely be challenges at the ballot box come November and absolutely no, it is not appropriate for anyone's civil rights to be subject to a popular vote, but dammit, this is progress. People, the majority of them not gay or lesbian, are standing up for my equality, to validate my communities' value, acknowledging our families and yes, our marriages. It does my heart good.
