....in downtown Santa Rosa?

I was driving into town this morning on my way to the hospital when I had to stop short, as in jam on my breaks, as three full-sized, adult wild turkeys decided to cross the street in front of me. Why did the turkey cross the road? Damned if I know.

Now we have some open spaces here, with parks scattered through town and creeks that criss-cross this area, but this was several blocks from any of these open spaces and these three sizable birds didn't appear to be in any hurry to get back to any of these areas, the nearest being about 4 city blocks away. They all seemed rather nonplussed about the people and traffic going on all around them. Now raccoons, skunks or even an occasional fox wouldn't have surprised me, though they generally are more circumspect here in town, but frankly none of them are nearly the size of these three birds. Now I have seen turkeys in Santa Rosa before, roaming in my office complex, but somehow that was much less surprising to me than this encounter, as my complex backs right up against one of the many creeks. Sauntering around downtown? Not so much.

I just wish I had had the wherewithal to have gotten a picture, but alas, it didn't dawn on my at the time.

Incidentally, I'm now leaving for home. Tomorrow is my final day of regularly scheduled patients. I close the door of the office for the last time the end of the month. Saturday packing up the office begins in earnest.
