I made a round trip to the lake house yesterday, getting home just in time to eat and light Yahrtzeit for my father as the Yom Kippur fast began at sundown. It is one of the spiritual traditions of my family of origin I still observe. Fast ends in a couple of hours, and I’ll be happy to have it behind me.

There was word of the widespread preventive power outage yesterday morning that would begin at midnight last night. It prompted my trip, predominantly to empty the fridges and freezer at the lake. 24-36 hours without power should be no problem if the appliances are closed for that time, but there were some worrisome predictions that some customers could be 5 days without power. The idea of no power for days sucks, but not nearly as badly as the wildfires that have devastated Northern California over the last several years. I’ve been thru two evacuations in the less than 3 years I’ve lived in Lake County, and honestly, it’s one of the reasons I’m ok with moving back to the River. Living here isn’t a guarantee, but note, while 4/5 of a million homes are without power now, my River home isn’t one of them.

Since I had already started moving all the alcohol, I figured I’d get under the house and finish the job. I’m moving things not by area at the lake, but as I have complete clarity of where they’re going at the River. I’m still astounded by the amount of drink & struck by how little of it I purchased. Price stickers are few and far between. Somewhere between 75 & 80% came as gifts. I’ve separated out the unopened bottles of scotch and tequila to a cool place in my walk-in closet. Would you believe there are 14 sealed bottles of scotch? How about 5 bottles of Añejo tequila? (Remember, I worked predominantly with the Hispanic community.). There was also a fair amount of wine, almost all of it white. This is wine country after all and many of my patients were either vineyard or winery workers. I did find 1/2 a dozen bottles of reds, but over the years I’ve been good at giving those away, unable to touch them myself (reds are a guaranteed migraine for me).

I’d said jokingly, I would never need to buy a bottle of single malt again. Well it’s clear now, that’s the case. I have 2 sealed bottles for every open one. Given the frequency I partake, I’ll be well into my 80s before they’re gone.

Speaking of alcohol, I’ve now moved all the homemade vanilla, as well as the grain etoh I’ve set aside to steep
it in. I’ve got a stash of vacuum sealed vanilla beans. I have enough already steeping for this year’s holiday gifts, but soon I need to get another gallon steeping for next year.

Pots and pans are now almost all moved, and I began working on the kitchen cabinets this last trip. A bookcase and some more of my husband’s clothes rounded out this last trip. I’m thinking seriously of moving my rolling kitchen island next trip.

On my way out the yard, I stopped to pick a 1/2 dozen persimmons from our tree. It’s early but they looked like they might be ready. We’ll see. I’m planning to break fast with one of them. They’re the flat bottomed fuyu that are edible while still firm.
