Thanksgiving.....
Dec. 1st, 2019 04:18 pmWe ping pong cross country every year. My sister alternates each year with her sister-in-law; Joan hosts the holiday in central New Jersey on even years, Ian’s sister odd years in Malibu. We drove south on Monday. Joan, Ian & mom flew in last Saturday. She rented a house in Santa Monica, room for them, their non-LA children and grandkids plus mom. Their middle son & his wife live just 2 block from that rental. Our Airb&b was 6 blocks south, just over the line into Venice. We’ve been doing this for the last decade, if not longer.
A friend comes to stay with our canines at out place, when we travel. He came last Sunday; we hit the road mid morning on Monday. The drive down took 8 hours. The trip back took over 12. Much needed precipitation started Wednesday night. In the mountains north of LA, that separate Southern California from the Central Valley, the snow was heavy closing I-5 over the Grapevine. The road was open yesterday when we drove back, but jeez what a mistake I made not taking 101 up the coast.
In retrospect, we should have hit the road when we got up. Instead we packed, checked out, loaded the car, and drove to my sister’s to b’fast and visit, before hitting the road. Just as we were saying our goodbyes, Joan decided to empty the refrigerator into my car. She shops at Whole Paycheck so what I drove off with wasn’t cheap. I won’t be shopping for at least another week now. Ten minutes after that, they realized there was no way they were fitting everyone and everything into the rental SUV for the trip to LAX. Would we drop Mom at United? Ultimately after my nephew was done playing Tetris with the SUV, it was Mom, & my sister & mom’s luggage. That left us driving south rather than north; ultimately it added 2 hours to our trip.
It was raining as we drove north; by the time we got to 3000’ over the grapevine, it turned to snow. We were in stop and go traffic from 11am till 6. We finally walked into the house at 11:30 last night. Mom called to say she was home and getting into bed, just before we hit SF. I did all the driving and this morning my butt and low back are in knots. Bumper to bumper traffic, in the dark, in the rain, left me in a constant state of muscle tension. Right now my butt, low back and hamstrings feel like I ran a half marathon. I’m in need of a hot soak in a hot tub, but that would be at my gym, which would entail a 1/2 hour drive & that’s more than I can face right now.
