Malware, spyware, Trojans & worms....
Feb. 17th, 2009 01:19 amMy husband is not quite a Luddite, though that's not too far off the mark. Computers frustrate him. Frustrate may be too mild a word. Incense is a better descriptor. There was a geek squad commercial a couple of years back where harried electronics owners are carrying their malfunctioning equipment across a field to the techie geeks, who assuringly say, "We'll take it from here." My husband was the guy in the 2nd row carrying the monitor, with the hatchet embeded in the screen.
So last night when I heard him exclaim "WTF!", I knew it wasn't good. He had picked up a piece of malware that had gotten past his anti-virus software. Undoing the damage fell to me.
I ran his McAfee which didn't see the maleware, let alone get rid of it. I shut it down figuring I'd do my research today. I only had to tell him to shut his machine down twice today. He was continuing to work on the machine, despite the malware attepting to launch itself every couple of minutes. Did my research and touched base with a couple of friends who're more computer savvy than I (grateful thanks to both

After supper I spent several hours on a mission now almost complete. The intrusive malware is history. One last spybot search & destroy is going on now and in a few minutes, my head will hit the pillow.
I wonder what dreams will come tonight. The last couple of nights Slumdog Millionaire has been haunting me, with some major Celtic overtones. Perhaps Slumdog the Celtic spybot will visit me tonight. Methinks either of my friendly advisors from earlier today would be much more fun.

Date: 2009-02-17 02:21 pm (UTC)My bill usually goes through a loudy exasperation routine, that I know now pretty much means, come here and help me with this fucking thing!
One time, I just threw out his hard drive. It was past time, anyway.
The last time, a little nuisance made itself a home in one of Window's 'protected' dll libraries, so it was able to continually re-assert itself. That one took almost eight hours of fly-swatting ability to crush...
