It was a long day yesterday. Two ladies in L&D at the same time, both ironically with the same name, both first and last. We started calling them Maria Multip and Maria Prime just to keep them differentiated. Multipera is the term for a woman having her second child or beyond, while primigravida refers to a woman having her first pregnancy. Maria Prime ultimately went home undelivered, as her cervix just wasn't ready to open and as her child is doing well its safe to wait another day or two before attempting to induce her again. She'll be 2 weeks overdue this Saturday.

The other Maria ultimately had a c-section last night at 10. Her daughter decided to attempt entry to this world face up, rather than face down, and despite her mother's successful delivery of her last child who weighed over a pound more, Casaira just wasn't going to fit coming down as she was. All went well, with Maria's sisters there in the OR with her, ready to welcome this very much wanted addition to their clan. Dad unfortunately was stuck in traffic driving north from the central coast and arrived in time to greet his daughter in the nursery. Mama and baby did just fine.

All was finished at 11pm just in time for nursing report at the change of shift, meaning that all the nurses are tied up sharing patient information with the next shift. As mom and her whole family were in the recovery room, and the evening shift was a bit short staffed, I was asked to mind Casaira for the 30 minutes report took. Twist my arm!!

I sat there in the nursery, in the rocking chair and simply held this absolutely gorgeous 7 pound 6 ounce sleeping beauty, gazing into her precious face and wondering what the world has in store for her life. It was a rare treat for me to have my own alone time to bond with this baby myself. Note, I've known this family for a long time. I delivered Maria's first born 16 years ago, as well as her sister's little girl just last year. I LIKE these folks (the feeling actually is mutual). I found myself hoping in 20 years or so, I'll have the privilege of seeing her graduate from college.
