I'm not quite "walk into walls" blind. In fact, most people who know me socially, don't realize how bad my eyes are, as I'm never without my contacts. Truth is however, without some kind of assistance, I can't see the "E" at the top of the eye chart.

Truth is while I despise glasses, I really should have a pair or two of my current prescription, which I don't. Most of the time, it seems like an unnecessary expense, that is until late in the evening when my eyes discover the meaning of "true grit".

Still, shelling out 200-300 bucks for a pair of glasses that I'll only use occasionally rubs me the wrong way. However, I discovered a solution to that last weekend.

On one of the multiple trips to labor and delivery in the two weeks, I noticed a rather kitsch pair of lenses on one of the first year residents. He's a cute little otter, and may well be family (now wouldn't that be nice). Somehow, I didn't expect to see a pair of Argyll frames on one of the residents. I complemented him on them to which he replied thanks, they were one of his 10 pair of glasses.

10 pair? 10 pair?!? Either residents are being paid much more than they were in my day, or he has a family member in the business. Neither turned out to be the case. It seems that there is a purveyor over the web for prescription glasses, Zenni Optical.com, which feature frames with single strength lenses starting at $8 a pair. I nearly fell out of my chair. The pair he had on had cost him $15.95. At that price, he really can't afford to get kitsch.

So during a little bit of downtime this afternoon, I stopped over at my ophthalmologist's office, had been do a pupillary distance, and then I can came back to my computer and went shopping. In about three weeks I'll have three pair of glasses, one pair of gold half rims with photo great lenses, one pair of rimless with blue titanium temples and polarized sunglasses lenses that clip on with magnets, and my own pair of semi-kitsch translucent Olive half rims. Total cost with shipping, $109.

Yesterday, I received an unexpected gift here on LiveJournal, marking of the Day of the Dead. Frankly, given my preoccupation (if not all out of angst) regarding the upcoming elections, I'd forgotten that holidays are on the way.

To all of you out there, I wish you all a joyous observation, what ever festival you observe, be it Halloween, Samhain, The Day of the Dead, All Souls Day, or All Saints Day. Blessed be.
