We need to move. We want to have this house on the market ASAP and in order to do that effectively we need to not be living here while we're trying to sell the place.
The renovations on the lake house are finally underway. Demolition of the current kitchen starts tomorrow morning. Hopefully, the dumpster is delivered by midday. We meet with the cabinet maker Tuesday morning. (Incidentally, we meet with the realtor and the woman he uses to stage homes for sale at 11 tomorrow morning.) I have tons of decisions to make quickly.
I've picked out a sink, and new fridge and stove for the kitchen. The measurements on those items are critical for the cabinet maker, as dimensions on those items are more variable.
Items like dishwashers are more standard in size and so finding the "right" one is less critical. I'm also acutely aware this is going to be a major chunk of money. Our contractor is a good friend and want to see us do things right the first time, so we get what will work well for us. He also keeps saying my choices are going to majorly affect what this all costs.
Bottom line? I want something that will be functional & attractive. I have some clear ideas of what I want but are they practical for the space? Where I can save money, I feel I need to.
Enter, stage left, free cycle. People list stuff there they don't want or need, they don't have the time or patience to try and sell, but don't want to throw away. Much stuff is crap, but sometimes....
Do I saw 700 sq" of bamboo flooring listed as well as a Bosch dishwasher. I responded and got a message back it had been promised. I messaged back my thanks for their response and to keep me in mind if the person flaked in them. Meanwhile, when I mentioned this to my husband, he went ballistic. "You don't have the time to go off looking at crap other people just want to get rid of! You need to focus on packing up and getting moved."
Then I got messaged back. The person had flaked. Was I still interested in the flooring? They sent a picture of it which looked really nice. And they were nearby.
Sort of.
The flooring is near by. The homeowners are in the delta.
I agreed to go over Saturday, when they would be there. Turns out my husband and are aren't the only queer couple retiring. They're an absolutely charming lesbian couple about our age, who bought their retirement dream home in Forestville and are updating it before moving in the end of this month they hope. (Can I ever relate to that.)
The flooring was beautiful! Thick bamboo laminated to a manufactured base layer. Why had they taken it up? It hadn't been installed improperly and squeaked badly. They'd had a professional take the floor up and it was neatly stacked in the garage, along with the Bosch dishwasher that another person had flaked & not picked up. It's Bosch's bottom end dishwasher, but it's stainless steel, it's working well and the size is pretty damned standard. And it's free. Last time I looked, that's a price you'd have a hard time beating. Yes, I might only get a few years out of it, but it's a standard size will be easily replaced when the need arises and that's $700-900 we won't have to spend now. Given the stove is listing for $2500 and the fridge for $3200.
Similarly the flooring. I looks to the eye like a rich medium brown hardwood floor. And at 700 sq", it will easily do the whole living room, or the garage, as that is likely going to become my craft space, or possibly the living rom & the master bedroom. Both my contractor and another friend with a trailer thought the flooring & dishwasher were good ideas. Chris came and collected them for me and is holding them at his place until my husband gets over himself & calms down. Given that good bamboo flooring, which this appears to be, runs average of $7/sq", this score could be worth about $5~5.5k we won't have to spend in this remodel.
And that, to quote Martha Stewart, is a good thing.
