I’m anxious about elections & plebiscites, particularly when the civil rights of a minority are being put to a popular vote. My own wrenching experience here in California, 3 months after I said “I do”, where the legality of my own marriage was thrown into question, by the last minute victory of Prop 8. The two weeks prior to the vote, the airwaves were filled with some of the most vile and hateful rhetoric I had ever heard and it turned the election from Prop 8 failing by a 10% margin as the polls had predicted, to squeaking thru to a dubious victory at 52%. It was roughly 18 months before the California Supreme Court ruled the marriages that had the occured stood as valid, not that we had federal recognition. Not back then.

Australia had a mail in Plebiscite on same gender marriage that end min the past
