Mid day in the garden of good and evil…
Mar. 13th, 2019 03:30 pmSpring appears to have arrived. Daffidil’s have come up all over this property and the narcissus seems to be dying out. The irises are putting out foliage though no signs of any flowers yet. Most of the fruit trees seem to be waking up; both peaches are in full flower as are several unidentified stone fruit trees (as in late rains took out all of the flowers year before last and last year, so we had no crop to ID them by).
The fires of the last two years have driven home how crucial management of the landscape is and we have decided to increase the defensible space around the house. Several large, leggy bushes on the eastern side of the house have been cut back practically to the ground by my husband. He left the roots behind and so they will come back.
There is a patch in front of the house of woody brush that we had Patrick take down early last year. No roots were taken out and so they were back as thick as ever.I started attacking the patch the day before yesterday. Root systems that I can get to without too much difficulty I am ripping up. Small stumps that were hazards to trip over I am using the saws-all on & and taking those down to the ground. The whole patch is probably 6‘ x 25‘ and as of this afternoon the green waste bin packed down tightly & filled to the brim, and a second trashcan is mostly full. About 2/3 of the patch is now cleared.
As for me, I can honestly say it hurts ‘so good‘. My shoulders, upper back, upper arms, and butt are good and sore. I’m amazed both at just how achy I am & that I can say in all honesty, it’s a good ache. I’m trying to be smart about this, & I’m watching body mechanics like a hawk, pulling things with my knees and thighs, not so much with my low back.
Time, I think for a hot shower.
