I was in Safeway earlier this week, when I ran into a guy who used to hang out at karaoke and now works at the store. He works in the bakery, but steered me away from their baked goods in favor of a new packaged bread line they're carrying. "This stuff really is killer", he says.
"Really?"
"Really!"

Then I looked at the label. Dave's Killer Bread. I looked at him over my glasses, left eyebrow raised.

"No, really! This stuff is about the best I've tasted."

Ok. Well it's on sale, so I figured what did I have to lose?

Oh. My. Gawd.

It's all organic, high fiber & the both the flavor and texture are superb.

What's more, the CEO is an ex-con, as are 30% of the company's workforce, all of whom are paid a living wage & get both medical and dental coverage. They use 100% wind generated power to run their bakeries.

I think I have a new staple in my kitchen.

Wow, that's some management!

But still... is "killer" really a good idea for a food name? *is amused*

Well, it's an American euphemism, that I remember from my childhood and is not all that frequently used any more. To say something is killer means it's really good.

American English is full of sayings that have come to mean just the opposite of what they used to. Some are more regional, such as calling something wicked to mean outstandingly good, is pretty much a phenomena of New England and rarely outside that geographic. Two more recent ones that caught me off guard are, "you're the bomb" (for "thanks, you're fantastic") and "How sick is that?" or "That's sick!" (for "That's wonderful!").

LOL I knew that. We have some similar slang in my language, but it's subtler. I don't know how exactly to explain it: I don't know if that particular word was even used literally as "killer" (of whatever living beings) or was invented as a joke, but it's not the standard modern Bulgarian "killer/murderer" word to be sure.

Now "How sick is that?/That's sick" is the one that really caught me bu surprise.

Imagine how I feel seeing that last one as a positive given what I do for a living.

Am drawing parallels from 40's gangster movies, where Ma bakes a saw blade in a loaf of bread for her son to escape.
