I can't tell you how many cassette players I fixed because the take-up reel didn't take up.
For the fortunate ones that turned off the motor, I used a pen to take up the slack.
There were way too many, though, where the tape broke in half and wrapped around the capstan.
PS: If any of you have a bad cassette machine, I'm NO LONGER working on them, period.

I had a portable reel-to-reel a la "Mission Impossible".

I'm assuming that they were introduced to the market the same year?

No, but you're close. The cassette was introduced in this country in '58 and the Bic crystal in '59.
Had to look this one up. I knew about the Bic, but thought the cassette was later.

In the old days, the conical tips were solid brass. You could fire them out of a gun, through a plank, and they'd still write.
However, put them in a pocket, tip side up, and you'd get big blue inkstains.
Trivia question: How much were they?
