As for the specious argument about hunting and the right of an individual to bear arms, if you need an AK-47 with 100 rounds of ammunition to kill a deer, perhaps hunting isn't your strong suit.
I've heard a very specialized case argument (protecting a large commercial orchard from deer, who in this case are treated like a crop-destroying pest) for semi-auto weapons, but that's not anything like the ordinary hunting situation.
My father loved to hunt, and as I recall his favorite rifle was a bolt-action model that would have had a pretty low rate of fire. For him it was about skill, not firepower.
They make many odd arguments in support of gun rights. But the reason they don't come out and clearly state is that they want to have equal firepower to the military ... so that, should it become necessary, they can overthrow a tyrannical government, as was done in 1776.
