An absolutely crapola evening...........
Mar. 29th, 2007 01:20 pmNo fewer than three people said to me last night that Mercury must be in retrograde. I'm sure they were right. It certainly was a lousy evening.
If you've read my posts last from last night, you're already aware I was not in good space. After I finished posting and was ready to walk out the door, I went into migraine aura, during which time I had no choice but to sit my ass down and wait until the meds kicked in.
I have classic migraines. Had my first at 17, as a college freshman. It hit at the end of a wine and cheese party. My very first time drinking red wine that wasn't extra-sweet Mogen David Kosher for Passover stuff. Turns out red wine has tyramine in it and for a handful of migraineurs tyramine is a trigger. T'was my very first attack, so I had no clue what the hell was going on. The flashing lights and squiggly lines that completely fucked up my visual field scared the daylights out of me. Thought I was going blind. 15 minutes later the aura went away and the headache hit, an ice pick thru my right eye and temple, throbbing in a way that grabbed me by the throat and made me revisit every last iota of wine and cheese I'd had that evening. I remember thinking, "I'm 17 and having a stroke; I'm fucked!" At 11:30 that night, a kind resident from the local medical school moon-lighting at the student infirmary, put me out of my misery with an injection of morphine. As the lights dimmed, I fell into merciful unconsciousness. When I awoke a few hours later, he handed me a flyer on migraines and told me never to drink red wine ever again. 35 years later, I still avoid the stuff like the plague.
Mom had migraines, as did her mother before her; for both of them they stopped with menopause. My headaches thankfully are infrequent now, maybe once or twice a year at most. Up until last night they've always responded to triptans. Last night however, was another story. For me the aura is as debilitating as the headache; actually, in some ways more so. With the visual disturbance I cannot do anything, but wait for it to pass. Can't drive, can't read, CAN'T SEE. The aura goes away generally when either the headache starts or the meds kick in, and the length of the aura is variable. Last night it went a full hour, before fading and I could see enough to drive. There was no headache, so I thought I was alright, that the event had been aborted. Unfortunately, the headache started about 10 minutes after I got in the car.
Now don't you know, of all times to get stopped by the cops, it happened last night on my way home and not once, but twice! (Don't these people talk with each other?)I was 3 miles from home, when all of the sudden I see flashing bubble lights in my rear view. Never a good sign, and ice water started flowing thru my veins. A moment later a flashlight was shining directly into my photophobic eyes, complementing the ice pick in my temple.
"Do you have a driver's license, sir?"
"Yes officer, here. Do you want my insurance card too?"
"No. Do You have any outstanding warrants or are you on probation?"
"No officer, I don't. I wasn't speeding and I didn't made any illegal moves, sir; Why did you stop me?"
"Did you know you had a tail light out?"
"No, I didn't. Which one is it?"
"Right rear"
With that he let me go, without even a fix it ticket. I headed back down the road and less than a mile later, got pulled over again by another of Sonoma County's finest. Another flashlight directly in my tender eyes.
"Did you know you have a tail light out?"
"Why yes officer, I do."
"You DO? How long have you known that & why haven't you fixed it?"
"I found out about it a mile back, when your colleague stopped me for the same thing. May I go home now? I promise you I'll deal with it tomorrow."
James, Gods love him, met me at the door with a cup of tea, for its caffeine to ease my aching head. Mercifully, I was able to fall asleep which always will end the headache. Today I feel run down and achy, and I want the # of the truck that hit my temple, but the migraine is over and done with.
AND finally my overdue lady is now in labour.

Date: 2007-03-30 07:41 am (UTC)Years ago, I took 9 people with me to protest a Sonoma County Sheriff officer who had a bent on pulling over bikers and/or anybody with a beard, for warrants checks.
They fired the cop, but I wonder if another one has taken his place?
For my migraines, I take an IM shot of Torodolâ„¢
Works super fast.
