Sitting on the edge of my seat.....

Illinois.
There, I've said it. The marriage equality bill which passed their Senate on Valentine's Day, has to come up either today or tomorrow in their House, or it's dead for this session. Gov. Quinn not only has pledged to sign it, he's asking for the House to pass it. He's said as much publicly.
I want to see this happen so badly, sitting in suspense is just brutal.
And no, I don't live in Illinois. This is still my battle. This is still a concern about my rights. It's a gathering of critical mass, every last bit of which goes to securing my civil rights throughout this country.
I found out yesterday that friends of mine, a lesbian couple are about to move to the Missouri side of Kansas City. (family issues.) To move from here in California, to a part of the Midwest where so much fewer of our rights are protected, is almost unfathomable to me.

Date: 2013-05-30 05:58 pm (UTC)Sorry to be so negative. I spent 3 months during medical school as a visiting student in Columbia, Mo. I liked Columbia - it even has a Pacifica radio station, but working the the University run clinic in Fulton, 15 minutes away from Columbia, was like being in another world. The open anti-minority and anti-semitic rhetoric I heard (or over-heard) from people that were being served by the clinic was dumbfounding. Granted, it was 1978-9, but it left me very clear, I was neither staying nor returning to that area.
