Late yesterday afternoon Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced there will be a special session of the state legislature to take up marriage equality on the Monday, the 28th of October. While nothing is for certain until the vote actually happens, it seems highly unlikely to me that the Governor, who is in favor of marriage equality, would call for this session if he was not confident of having the votes in the legislature to have it pass. Stay tuned for details!

Incidentally, this will 5 days after the Supreme Court of New Mexico hears oral arguments in a case that will clarify state law regarding the legality of same-sex marriages. This is after all 33 county clerks in the state asked for guidance on the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The governor has canvassed the legislature, particularly the House, extensively. And while I'm confident that we have the votes now, I am fearful of having such a large window of time for the crazed Xtian right to wreak havoc on the vote. Bishop Silva recently wrote a letter to his entire flock suggesting that some discrimination was ok; even godly, and that marriage equality would lead to increased problems, including suicide, with kids.

Charming man, he.

I've got my fingers crossed. I'm getting married here in California and hoping to move to Hawaii next year with the legalities of the marriage intact.

Who is Bishop Silva? Sounds like he's preaching the love of Christ to his flock and teaching them how to be meek and kind to the lowest of people.

If only the church could fight political corruption with as much rabid mouth-foaming as they fight marriage equality we might have a better world.

Oh, I looked him up, he's the head of the Church in Hawaii. I read up on the history and they're the people responsible for banning Hula and forcing the women to cover their breasts(because the priests were getting boners for them instead of the altar boys most likely).

I think the reason the church is against gay marriage is that they might then have to acknowledge priest/altar boy relationships.
