Dinner out.....
May. 4th, 2014 12:35 amMexican food is usually safe for me; other then flour tortillas, most fare is wheat free, but you still have to ask. Wheat in the chili rellenos is to be expected & obedient little celiac I double checked. The server went and asked. They were as expected, a no go. The server shrugged, then asked, "¿estas alérgico?" I nodded, not wanting to go into all the details. I asked for the chicken tamale. His coworker shook her head. "Hay harina en el molé."
I was surprised. I make molé myself and while I don't thicken mine, I know plenty of folks who'll use a stale corn tortilla or three, to do just that. This place uses wheat flour. I suggested the green tomatillo/avocado sauce. Then his co-worker started shaking her head again. The chicken in the tamale had been dredged in flour first. I switched again, this time to the safety of an enchilada de pollo en salsa verde cón un taco de pastor, frijoles enteros en el lado. Quite satisfying.
I did some straightening in the pantry closet before I left for the gym this morning. That included reorganizing the liquor shelf, do I now know exactly what we have and how much. (Jeez, do we have Kalúa & single malt scotch.) I threw together a mocha razzmatazz tonight. (Hot coffee, Kalúa, Chambourd, & a shot of chocolate almond milk.)
This was all a bit of a reward after my workout today; actually spent 1/2 an hour lifting, then a four mile run.
Time for bed. In 8 hours I get up and do it all again.

They have not only a (quite delicious made in-house) vegan burger patty, but clearly marked gluten-free options, grilled veggie skewers, and HFCS-free condiments.
It's quickly becoming one of my vegan-safe (and gluten-safe!) restaurant standbys. (Whole Foods and Chipotle--which has a "sofritas" vegan protein filling--are two others.)
For local vegan/veggie restaurants (which I am increasingly finding to be far more gluten-aware than mainstream eating establishments), go over to www.happycow.net. Happy Cow also has iOS and Android location-sensitive apps for easy location of nearby suitable eating places.
