I'm wearing black today.

Our tenant of the most 20 years died in the wee hours of this morning at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Rosa. He'd gone on to hospice within the last week and finally he passed on this morning, secondary to the strokes he'd suffered. Sometimes a cancer will cause a hypercoagulable state which in turn can cause all sorts of vascular havoc. However, given Roger's prognosis from his underlying cancer diagnosis, which was bleak at best, this relatively fast end may in someways be a blessing.

Sadly, Roger left us without a will and with a whole mess of loose ends that we will have to tie up. Sometimes being a lawyer can be a good thing; my husband does know how to probate an estate. What family he has is elderly and halfway across the country – too infirm to travel here. There will be the money there to handle his final expenses as well as an inheritance for those elder relatives. My husband and I will at some point get the money for his outstanding rent, which will continue to accrue until his unit is vacated; this will get taken care of out of the probate.

At this point, I'm looking for a new home for his dog. (My husband is not particularly fond of little dogs, and this one is not doing a good job of endearing herself with him. She does not seem capable of "making nice" with the cat.) I think I am very close to succeeding in my search.

I am very saddened by this whole turn of events. Not tearful, at least not yet, but very, very sad. Roger, while somewhat distant, was the quintessential nice guy, & an archetypal midwesterner. I wish we had been closer. Right now I feel the need to be able to lay some flowers on his grave, and a pimple on his headstone.
