Tearful this morning...
Dec. 12th, 2015 09:08 amI'm rarely good when I'm on call and this IS a call weekend for me. This morning I'm a bit short on sleep. This may be a factor in my emotional rawness.
I'm feeling fearful and marginalized this morning. On the edge of tears. As a gay man, as a Jew, as a child of an immigrant family, as a bilingual person, I'm feeling anxious. Yeah, I look Anglo. I can pass for a generic, middle aged white guy. As a person of minority origin, I'm nervous. Yeah. At the moment, the minorities I belong to are facing improved social acceptance.
How permanent is it?
The far right is still working to demonize people. Trump's anti-Muslim rhetoric should unnerve and offend everyone, particularly any of us who have faced discrimination historically. In a country with a long history of discrimination against people of minority status, we must all remain vigilant and ready to push back against prejudice. We cannot afford to remain silent.

Date: 2015-12-14 03:26 pm (UTC)This rash of fascism rising among the people is more worrisome than the rash of fascism rising among the Government (particularly in the UK) and I am just floored at how people are falling into fear and phobia about people who practice Islam and refugees in general. The anti-refugee sentiment here is high too - but our new and more Liberal government is pretty much ignoring it and doing what is right to help people.
I admit, our silence could kill us all. We have to find a way to head off these twisted sentiments that are dominating the media and our cultures lately.
