"The girl with colitis goes by.........."
Jan. 27th, 2005 08:20 pmWell it's been a week. A week ago today I was contemplating my mortality, certain that the following morning (last Friday)I'd be told I had some dire malignancy & that it was time to put my affairs in order. Instead, I found out I have ulcerative colitis.
I never thought that I'd find the use of a suppository to be a godsend, but that's what it's been. When Randy told me he was giving me a suppository to use twice a day, I simply nodded my head obediently, while thinking, "ewww!" I was already feeling raw; the thought of sticking anything there along with my finger was daunting. It was though very much the right thing to do. That Canasa suppository is made from the same stuff in Rowasa and Asacol. The bloody prescription cost me 175 bucks, but it turns out it's been worth every penny! There's been no appreciable bleeding in almost 4 days.
The few days preceding the colonoscopy were uncomfortable mostly from a mental standpoint. I had envisioned the worst. The physical discomfort was really that not all that bad. Saturday, however, was a horse of another color. The first time I sat down of the toilet, it felt like someone was taking a knife to my innards. No wonder I was bleeding! For days after, any time I needed to use the toilet, which was often, the ordeal left me panting and weak. Worse, the idea of any exertion was out of the question. Even the idea made my butt throb. There have been times in the last several days, where I have had to bite my lip while on the throne, so as not to scream. There've been times where biting my lip hasn't worked.
This morning, however, has not been an ordeal. Two trips to the bathroom have been, in essence, painless. Things are not yet back to normal, but this is the closest they've been in recent memory.
Focusing and talking about this may be a bit much, but from where I sit, it's been difficult to think about much else.
My significant other is getting rather tired of all this. No sex and a bear of an attitude to contend with; lets just say he's earning karma points bigtime this past week.
