After almost a decade in remission, I flared after taking the Covid Vaccine immediately after each dose. Unfortunately, while its gotten better, I haven’t gone back into remission even 8 months post my first dose & it’s getting old.  

In comparison to others I know with this disease, I’m not that impaired.  I’m generally well managed with Celebrex once daily and topical diclofenac for breakthrough flares.   I’ve screwed up a handful of times and missed my daily Celecoxib and by 12 hours after I’ve missed the capsule, I am NOT a happy camper.   Oddly this time around I’m having more trouble with tendonitises than discreet joint inflammation, particularly in my wrists and shoulders.   Given the pandemic, I’m extremely grateful I’m not taking any of the biologics. Downing out my immune system is the last thing I need in the time of Covid.

I was fine when I went to bed last night. Well, almost fine. My right shoulder was a tad irritable, but nothing to write home about.   I woke up at 5 AM with that shoulder on fire and no position I could find alleviated my discomfort.  When either shoulder flares badly, lying down makes me more uncomfortable. After 15 minutes of shear misery I gave up, got up, went to medicate, & plopped my butt down into the easy chair in the sitting room. Two hours, a celecoxib, some topical diclofenac, & a couple of Tylenol later, and I think I can go back to sleep.

I have an appointment with my PCP on Thursday and I'm concerned I won't be able to adequately describe what is going on with me. When I received my first Moderna shot, the nurse went high up on my arm, almost to my shoulder. It was very painful. In the 8 months since then, I've had pain at the site and into my bicep. Is it possible, the shot was driven into a nerve or muscle that would cause such discomfort? The second shot was in my dominant arm; I barely felt it and I've had no issue on the left side at all. Now, I have pain in my shoulder blade on the side of the first dose. I almost cancelled my appointment yesterday, as I don't know if anything I'm experiencing can be adequately addressed without any visible symptoms. Am I losing it?

Losing it? I doubt it. However without seeing exactly where your pain is, I would only be speculating. I would recommend you have your pcp examine the location if you’re still having symptoms. Could you have a tendonitis? Is the sensation in the skin normal?

Still, speaking as someone who had an auto-immune problem reactivate after both doses of Pfizer, I hear your hesitation, and I’m planning to go ahead and get my booster. However, now that mixing vaccines has been approved, my booster will be Moderna rather than Pfizer. There is little if any data available to tell me this will be better reaction wise, so in essence it’s a crap shoot, but given my previous reaction, I doubt I have anything to lose.

Given my age and other underlying health problems, for me at least, getting a booster is still a no brainer.

Last Tuesday, I got my Moderna Booster (a full dose, not half due to my health history and age) and a flu shot. One in each arm. I had a little soreness in both arms; a headache on Wednesday; I slept most of the day by choice. I feel fine now, though the shoulder weakness continues. I hope everything goes well for you.

Oh, and do not let your provider Pooh-Pooh your symptoms. If you’re still having them, and he (or she) has no clue what’s causing them, get a referral to see someone who can diagnose it.
