Venice capured my imagination when I was a small child. The idea of a city rising out of the water was so fantastic a concept that I couldn't wait to see it for myself. having grown up on the coast in a place just barely over sea level, streets that were filled with water was magical concept.

I made it to Venice in my late 40's and I was not diassapointed with its beauty. I was also alarmed by my fist experience of an acqua alta. Piazza San Marco was mostly under 3-6 inches of water for part of my visit back then and I looked at some of the plans the Italian government was drawing up to save the city from rising waters.

It is with both wonder and sadness that I saw this morning a video of tourists not wading, but swimming in Piazza San Marco yesterday.

There were also photos of people in an indoor cafe that was flooded knee deep in water, still open for business people milling about sipping espresso and capuccino with their biscotti in hand.

I grieves me that a city I love may cease to exist during my live time. I'm also sobered by recent events in the city I grew up in, that my old neighborhood, so close to the water that Venice seemed magical, had 2-3 feet of water in them.
