Sightseeing in Paradise....
Jun. 12th, 2008 02:00 pmWhen we returned to the room from Ulua Beach, we showered, and then got distracted, doing what some happily married couples do when left to their own devices on vacation, sans children, pets, telephones, etc. and then I think we dozed for a bit. Rinsing off again, we dressed and headed out the door. LJ declined telling me where we were headed, though I found us on the Pi'ilani Highway, first headed north, then west towards Lahaina, then north again headed towards Wailuku. Once in Wailuku (the Maui County seat) we headed west again up into the mountains.
The Iao Valley turned out to be a destination. This lush and verdant steep valley is in the convergence of two mountain streams, and was once home to a tribe of native Hawaiians that were hill dwellers, and if I read my history correctly one of the last strives to be conquered in the founding of the Hawaiian Kingdom under Kamehameha the First. The area is easily 15° cooler than Wailuku in just 3 or 4 miles downhill, down the road. This wooded glen was a delight for the eye, and for your toes and calves, if you chose to get in the water.
We wandered around the valley park for about an hour and a half. There isn't much more for me to say about this, so I'll let the following pictures speak for themselves.

Tomorrow: The perfect Beach......
