I'd been wanting to get a hamsa, aka 'Hand of God', aka 'Hand of Fatima', aka 'Hand of Miriam' for a very long time. With the spiritual things that have been affecting my life as of late, it has been a somewhat mounting desire. I've always appreciated the symbol, particularly as it is common not only to Jewish, but to Islamic tradition and in our current divided and contentious world, a shared symbol of protection and spirituality has always appealed to me. I've even given one as a gift, to someone infact I felt could really use some divine protection and guidance. However, I'd not found the right one for myself; they've all been either too small, or the wrong color of gold, too delicate, too feminine, or just not the right 'one'. The chain I wear on my neck most of the time has a high gold content. It really is the color of true gold, and anything lower than 18K just doesn't look right on it. The color's off. Since the majority of what's sold today is 14K, I had never seen a hamsa that would look right on it.

I felt drawn today to stop and see Nadine at the pawn shop. I felt as it there was something I needed to attend to. I figured there was something I was supposed to talk to her about. When I walked in however, she simply handed me the ring I'd gotten for so-and-so's next X-mas gift, which was missing a small sapphire and which had been sitting there since January. I was standing at the counter right in front of the Hamsa when she handed it to me, and when I looked down, it simply glinted a warm "Hi there." It's now hanging on my neck.

I asked Nadine how long it had been there. She said it came into the shop before she returned from Sac'to some months back and it was the first one she'd seen there, in all the years she had worked at the shop. Then we both had a good chuckle. We both knew what the amulet was, but when I went to pay for it, the computer entry on it read that is was a Buddhist talisman.

I guess it had been waiting there for me.
