Writer's Block: Animal Instinct

[Error: unknown template qotd] Having been on a vision quest to find my totem, I'm clear. You do not choose your totem spirit guide; it chooses you. My totem confused me when I first saw it, appropriate as it is the guide, not you.

In some ways, this question belittles the totem, it's importance and the spirituality behind the vision quest.

Yeah I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at when I first saw mine either. Later I decided that it was in fact my animal because it felt right. I could feel a connection that I wouldn't have with any random spirit.

I approached the vision quest with a medicine man, open to whatever would come. In my own mind, I had semi-expected a mammal of some sort as a guide; the look of sheer confusion on my face, when I saw my totem left the shaman guiding me in my quest chuckling.

We had set up a 'semi-sweatroom' in our home, and had started in a guided meditation for several hours. The sweat ran down my forehead, stinging my eyes, even though they were closed. I finally saw my totem in a flash of bright light, and my bewilderment was palpable. The shaman later described my face as a very clear "WTF?!?", one of the clearest "WTF" faces he had ever seen.

I did like that film though. However daemon does NOT equal totem.

Well... the question may have been better written.

How about "What animal might you expect to find as your spirit guide, or expected you might find before finding it?"

More about whatever preconceived notions you might have had, or what animals you feel a special affinity for.
