Jul. 4th, 2006 09:55 pmLJ and I spent the day here on the property. We had stuff to do here with the remodel. I spent the day cleaning and putting things away, mostly in the kitchen.
When I was a kid, my folks had a dining room set with a china cabinet. I remember setting the table for guests, simply opening the doors and taking out the pieces that were needed to serve and putting them on the table. None of this washing them first, because they’re dusty or worse, some rodent left gifts on them. I mentioned to Ben I wanted find a china cabinet someday, and now, in less than a couple of weeks, it’s in my kitchen. It seems when Ben sold his place, which was then in escrow, he sold it with its furnishings. The new owner wanted the dining table, chairs and sideboard, but had no use for the china cabinet. Ben pulled it and brought it over.
The cabinet is cherry, made by Thomasville, drawers and doored shelves below, adjustable tempered glass shelves, & halogen lights behind beveled glass doors above. Not only are all the Dansk serving pieces (serving bowls, casseroles, covered dishes, serving platters, tea & coffee pots, candlesticks, etc) on the lighted shelves, so is my ‘good’ china. 17 years ago my folks went to Portugal and came back with service for 12 they felt I needed. The silver plate is in the drawers below, along with the Dansk cups, stemware, demitasse service and the table linens. It all sounds so middle class, with pretense of being upper class. Still now that it all has a ‘home’, one that affords easy access for me, I expect to be able to use it. I love being able to entertain and set a ‘nice’ table where everything matches. Must be one of those ‘gay’ genes I was born with.
