An avian Chihuahua....
Jul. 2nd, 2007 02:49 pmLast Wed. evening after finishing work, I stepped out the back door of my office and almost stepped headlong into a birdfight. The entire complex was empty, or at least appeared to be and no cars other than mine were in the lot. Just as I opened the door to step out, a black bird, somewhere between the size of stellar jay and a crow swooped past at waist level, then arced upward gracefully to land on one of the powerlines above the fence separating the medical complex from the private homes next door. He was followed close behind by a bird less than half his size. The smaller of the two landed on another line 5 feet above the first, all the while squawking loudly at the other, who sat quietly on his perch. The smaller bird continued to squawk incessantly, periodically taking to the air and divebombing the larger bird. After a bit the larger bird took to the air once more, the smaller one once again in hot pursuit, the agressive little thing continuing to hurl avian invectives at his larger yet more placid rival. It was like watching a chihuahua barking and nipping at a great dane. What was the smaller one defending? A mate and their young? His territory? Or had the larger bird ticked this little guy off in some other way? T'was an interesting show.
