I'm a native New Yorker.....
Jun. 24th, 2011 11:28 pmI left NY 30 years ago. I was a year out of medical school (SUNY-B'klyn), had just turned 26 and turned my eyes west for my training and a new life. A week after moving I met the man who would become my husband, another native NY'er. We celebrate 30 years together, as well as our third anniversary of being legally wed the 20th of next month.
And tonight, the senate of our home state voted for marriage equality. It now goes to the governor, who lobbied hard for the bill's passage (incidentally I went to medical school with his sister, Margaret).
I entered high school in Sept '69, walking distance from the Stonewall Inn, 2 months after the riots. I marched in several of the early NY pride parades while I was in school. Back then I never dreamed that marriage would ever be an option for me.
To have lived long enough to see marriage equality happen in NY, the place where I grew up, the place where our civil rights movement began in earnest brings me more joy than I can express.

Date: 2011-06-25 08:58 pm (UTC)I'm excited that NY has followed the norm, and that maybe this will be the beginning of the end of DOMA and of the current law in California. And congratulations on your marriage and partnership; here's a toast to many more years!

Eliminate that, it doesn't matter where we get married. If comity returns (recognition of marriages and divorces that happen elsewhere), we can get married where we wish and then return home to where ever. At least that's how I see it.
