In Safeway yesterday, I bumped into the same woman 3 times. The first interchange startled her. I was in the produce aisle and we reached for the same Tuscan melon. She looked at me and did a double take. Actually, a triple take, shaking her head when she looked at me a third time.

"Are you related to Mario Battali?"
"Um, no ma'am."
She scowled, then shrugged.
"My, you look just like him. Has anyone ever told you that?"
I shook my head no. I've been mistaken for many things in my life. Being Italian generally isn't one of them.

10 minutes later I walked into her again, as I exited the mens room. She was on line for the ladies. She smiled and I nodded.

10 minutes later she exited her checkout line just as I exited mine, right next to her's. Kismet I suppose. She shook her head again and smiled.

"Just like Mario Battali," she said with a gentle smile.
"But he's a blond," I protested.
"You could be brothers."

I shook my head.

I wonder if the Cento canned tomatoes in my cart had anything to do with it...

1) In general you will see either Birkenstocks or cowboy boots on my feet. Crocs? Even the idea of plastic in direct contact with my skin makes me sweat. And there are much nicer ways to make me sweat.
2) On humid days, I suffer from big hair, which is why my hair is almost always tied back.

If you shaved your beard waaaaaaay too close and badly chopped off most of your hair, you could indeed vaguely resemble Mario Batali.
