Comfort food......
Mar. 7th, 2007 09:14 amLike the USA network, once again I have been up all night. Tom took me to dinner last evening, for wonderful Indian food and a couple of hours of his delightful company. I'm looking forward to his departure from Santa Rosa, much the way one looks forward to a root canal. You know its inevitable, but you really can think of other things you'd rather experience. Tom's a travel nurse and finishes his second contract here in another week and a half. Then there's a short vacation for him, a bit of time back home to see family and friends and then on to his next contract which will be somewhere in the Denver-Boulder corridor, putting him near to his prospective honey. I do want him to be happy. Just wish that would put him nearby.
ANYWAY, I brought dinner home to my sweetheart, and fell into bed, I was so tired. Think I passed out sometime in the vicinity of 11:30 last night.
The phone rang at a quarter to 2 this morning. My patient showed up in labor having broken her bag of water an hour earlier. Her exam showed she was having the little girl she wanted. The bad news was it was clear she was having a girl, because the childs vagina was the presenting part. She was breech.
I made the drive cross county to the hospital in 30 minutes and by 5 this morning, was finished with the mother's c-section, the child's exam, and all the paperwork entailed. I needed fuel in the car before going anywhere else, and by the time that was done, it made more sense to go to my office and get some paper work done, ane then see the morning's patients. I've rescheduled the afternoon. Cannot pull an all-nighter and then see a full day of patients thereafter. I just can't do that anymore.
When I logged on this morning to send email to my transcriptionist at 6 am, I noticed Don on line and sent him a good morning. We had a brief interchange, during which he found out I'd been up all night. Mensch that he is, he showed up here 20 minutes ago with breakfast for me - a toasted garlic bagel, with lox, red onion, capers and a schmear of cream cheese. Talk about comfort food from my childhood! He had me pegged. The only way to have made this more authentic, would have been to have the Sunday NY Times crossword, a pot of Earl Grey tea and my mother in tow! I cannot get over just how incredibly sweet and thoughtful that was of him.
So friends, my question for each of you reading this, what is comfort food for you?
