Last night Rosie was a guest on the Rachel Maddow Show, after the video below hit the net.

I'm bilingual, spend the majority of my professional time working with the Latino community and I found Romney's comments on the now infamous "47% video" personally offensive, where he suggested had his father who was born Mexico to Americans, been born instead to Mexican parents, he would have an easier time winning the hispanic vote. When I first heard that video, I nearly threw my shoe at the TV.

Remember folks, this is the man who would like latinos to self-deport.

He doesn't tell the entire story about why his father was born in Mexico. His grandfather fled to Mexico to escape a polygamy charge. Later, after George's birth and when the heat was off, the family sneaked back across to border and returned to Utah.

I guess laws don't matter if one's last name is Romney.

My Spanish needs work. I've lived the majority of my adult life near Latino communities. They're the best neighbors I've met.

Actually, they repatriated because the threat of violence during the Mexican revolution. Some of the Mormon community returned after the revolution and are still in Chihuahua, including a good number of Mitt's cousins. That's like the straight white guys who claim they would have an easier time if they were a disabled black lesbian woman. Easier than being a straight white man? Puh-lease...

Indeed. People who enjoy privilege often don't recognize that they do.

BTW, while I was in medical school, something happened that annoyed the crap out of me. I routinely don't answer check boxes for demographic. If you cannot tell I'm male by my first name, then you don't deserve to know. I also decline to state ethnicity and race most of the time, except for the census. Now, according to my paternal grandmother, her father was Sephardi (Spanish Jewry). Bubbie was from Odessa and there was a population of Turkish Jews who'd crossed the Black Sea, landing in the community she grew up in, so the story is feasible. However, I have no proof, and Bubbie was neither a Ladino nor Spanish speaker.

The dean of my class was also my adviser, and during a "how's life and school going" session early my sophomore year, the conversation turned to family and heritage. One of things I shared with him was Grandma's assertion. I was the chapter president for AMSA (Amer. Medical Student Association) at the time and I looked at the school's demographics for each class yearly, comparing them to other schools in the area (I became the asst. regional trustee the following year, and the full trustee the year after.). I had been struck my freshman year how almost every Black or Hispanic student in my class was also female. Two minority points for the price of one seat. After my conversation with the dean, the number of Hispanic/Spanish students in my class went up by one and there were no transfers into my class that year. I assume that one was likely me, though again, I have no proof. I cannot tell you how much the thought they probably counted me as Hispanic, offends me.
