So I have a meeting at lunch today. One of the local home health agencies that I refer to has asked me to consider becoming their medical director after the retirement of their current one. It came as a bit of a surprise.

Turns out when I was cross covering for a colleague last year, I was called to the ER for an elderly patient with a recently diagnosed metastatic malignancy. His daughter was there in the ER with him, and was quite obviously fairly distraught with the situation, midway between tears and the all too familiar 'deer-in-the-headlights' look. After getting the patient admitted and ready to send up to the ward, I sat down with the woman to try and give her some comfort and answer her questions. It was late, and while the hospital's lot is reasonably well lit, I'm not generally comfortable with a slightly built woman walking herself alone to her car after dark, especially so given the state of mind she was in. After answering as many of her questions as I could, I said, "let me walk you to your car; I'm finished here, and you need some rest." On the way to the car, I counseled her about what questions I would be asking both her oncologist as well as her primary, some of which included discussing with them when it would be time to be calling in hospice. My colleague assumed the elder's care again the following morning. I never saw the man, or his family again.

Well, guess whose daughter works for this home health agency & pushed their administration to approach me for this job, with the departure of their last director? She's one of the folks who'll be meeting with me at lunch today.
