19 and counting.....
May. 22nd, 2014 09:26 amSo it appears at this point that Oregon and Pennsylvania have come over to the marriage equality side for good. There is no one to appeal in Oregon's case. Everyone who had the authority to appeal believed that the marriage ban was unconstitutional. In Pennsylvania the Atty. Gen. had made it clear long ago that she thought the band was unconstitutional & yesterday the governor, a Republican tea partier, announced that he would not appeal. He's in the midst of a campaign to maintain his seat, and it already doesn't look good for him. Given the popular support overturning the marriage ban has in Pennsylvania he can't afford to continue with an appeal. So now and for good the Northeast is a solid swath from Maryland to Maine and the entire West Coast are all places of marriage equality.
Appeals are going on in the victories that we've won in Utah, Idaho, Oklahoma, Virginia, Texas, Michigan, Arkansas, Ohio, and Kentucky. Given that we have not lost a single court case since Windsor, I think at this point it appears that the handwriting is on the wall.
I think it's time for me to stick my neck out again with the production. There will be marriage equality nationally by June 2015. I'm even willing to predict it's going to be a 5-4 decision.
