My mother called this morning as I was starting to see patients. I missed her call. I'd gone into a room to see a patient and had left my mobile on my desk.
A call from either her or my sister at that hour is rarely good news. Bracing myself, I buzzed her back.
"Ma, is everything all right?"
"fumpher, fumpher, crackle, fumpher."
"Ma, what did you say? I can't hear you."
"Your cousin crackle, static, crackle and mutter, mutter, static, mutter baby yesterday!"
"What?!?"
"Your cousin and her husband had a baby girl yesterday!"
"What? WHO??"
"Audrey and Richard became parents yesterday!"
"Really? Wonderful!! When did the adoption go thru?"
"What adoption? They had a baby! YESTERDAY MORNING!"
"What??!? You're kidding me, right?"
"DID YOU NOT HEAR ME? THEY HAD AN 8 1/2 POUND BABY GIRL YESTERDAY MORNING!"
Finding out your cousin just had a baby isn't particularly shocking to most people. However, my cousin turns 55 this coming December. Oh, and I think her husband is 13 years her senior.
I've been giggling most of the day today.
Before any of you out there even think how dare they, let me tell you the grandparents my cousin and I shared both made it well into their 90's. Grandpa didn't fully retire from tailoring until he was almost 90. My aunt will be 80 on her next birthday and I suspect is tickled pink becoming a grandmother again.
Don't know yet if the child's a redhead or not, or if she even HAS hair yet (red really IS the family color, btw), but what I do know is she's healthy and has parents that are absolutely thrilled.
