In the past 6 months I've become a pretty devoted Grocery Outlet shopper. Almost everything for tonight's dessert came from there. The prices are nothing short of phenomenal and the quality is often exceptional. Plenty of organics, lots of stuff gluten free and always new stuff coming in. You never know what they'll have. Trouble is often if you find something you really like, it's gone when you go back for more. If you're lucky they have it gain a few months later.

So dessert tonight was a sundae - a satsuma mandarin sectioned ($1.99 2# bag), Fox's tangerine and dark chocolate frozen yogurt ($1.49 pint), chopped glacéed candied orange peel (other market) and a shpritz of chocolate whipped cream ($1.49 spray can).

Incidentally, tonight's supper was all from there as well. The smoked salmon was $10/lb, the havarti $2.50 for a 1/2# chunk, the eggs $3.59 for a dozen jumbo organic brown, the onion $1.59 #2 bag organic, the shrooms $2 1/2#.

Really nice eating well on the cheap.

It was announced this week that Grocery Outlet has snapped up the lease on the empty former Fresh&Easy store across the street from our home. We are pleased.

I never heard of Grocery Outlet. I like the idea though.

Since working for Parks, I shop at Grocery Outlet all the time.

Hmmm... doesn't seem to be one near enough to where I live to be remotely practical; according to Google Maps, the nearest one is at least a 45-minute drive one way....

I wish there were a bit more diversity around here - it's mostly Ralphs/Vons with a couple Trader Joe's and a Gelson's over in Silverlake before you get down into little independents. Would be nice to have, say, a WinCo and a Grocery Outlet nearby. ;)

WinCo I'm not familiar with. Trader Joes I like a lot and we have two in Santa Rosa. Love the quality of their heavyweight insulated shopping bags. I have two of them in my trunk and use them to shop everywhere. At $5.99 a pop, they're an excellent buy. Durable, high capacity and zipper closure; what's not to like?

Grocery outlet is interesting in much of what they carry is stuff that was overstock and needs to get sold now before reaching its outdate. With coffee, frozen foods, canned goods, wines, cheeses, yogurt, chocolate, packaged carbs, nearing best by dates is not such a major deal. On those items the prices are phenomenal. The fresh bread aisle? (Yes I do buy bread for my husband) Savings on those are minimal. On my gluten free items routinely I save 50 to 75% over Safeway.
