Four or five months back I slipped on the wet deck and put my hand out to stop my fall - directly into the stained glass panel in the door to the kitchen. The panel buckled and fell into the kitchen, crashing ignominiously onto the floor. Miraculously, I came away annoyed, but intact and unscathed. My husband's response was to tape a piece of plastic sheeting over the opening, temporarily.

Temporarily? As I think about this now, I slipped on a wet deck. Five months back puts us in May, a month well passed the rainy season. Let's make that at least 7 months, if not 8.

In any event, we both figured we'd find a new piece of stained glass to put in the opening. How hard and expensive could that be? (Yeah. Right.)

With listing the property for sale looming & no stained glass materializing, I bit the bullet and got a piece of bronze colored tempered glass to put in the opening. I called my husband for the measurements - 1/16" shy of 1' by 2', & ordered the glass accordingly. Went to fetch it the following day & when I got it home, the panel was too long by 1/4".

(F@ck me running.) LJ offered to get me the glass cutter. I reminded him you can't cut tempered glass.

There were actually grooves at the top & bottom of the opening to accept the glass. I got out my Dremel & a couple of wood chisels & deepened the upper groove by a 1/4".

Voila! Glass panel in, molding strips nailed back into place. Repair done.

As I said, I feel majorly butch, right about now.

It's just after 8 am. I'm having b'fast as I write, and whilst I really need to get on with my day, it's a bit tough getting started. We lost power as I was making myself b'fast.

Oh, that's spooky. Lights just came back on as I wrote that. That was only 45 minutes without. I'm sipping my coffee, having finished my Udi's rye style toast with a smear of hummus, and about to attack my yogurt and mango. After I finish it, i think I'll run over to Safeway and see if I can swipe some wine boxes to pack up glassware.

I attacked the kitchen yesterday, packing up about half of the China hutch's contents. The fine China is all bubble wrapped and packed, & much of the Dansk is as well. There are a dozen boxes to load into my husband's car for his trip to the Lake house maƱana, & likely I'll have that again today, if not more. Finding the right boxes to fit things safely is the challenge. Platters and serving pieces are the biggest problem, but the platters are now done.

The realtor was here yesterday. He's kind of making it clear it will be easier to sell the property if we're out of it. Given that the renovations on the Lake house are just starting, there are problems with that logistically, but damn it, his thoughts about what we should be able to get for this place will make that inconvenience worth it.

Enough for now. I've got packing to go do.

Conbutchulations. You're reminding me of my recent install of a new under-cupboard/over-counter light in my kitchen. Sounds like a mundane, easy thing, but the house is from 1950 and I really put in a lot of thoughtful effort to make a nice and code-compliant job of it with a pull-chain switch on the new junction box I put in for it.

I haven't taken on anything electrical, at least not yet. Wood is so basic and organic, it's actually fun to work on.

I envy you your butch moment. I grit my teeth at home repairs for fear that I'll screw it up, but most of them have actually worked out.

I'm debating tackling the replacing of a toilet. My sister says it should take about 20 minutes. We will see.

I figure if i don't know how to do something, I look it up. I did that with simple in office medical procedures. There are places to look up step by step instructions how to do things, these days often not just with pictures, but these days often with video.

You are what you want to be with all that gorgeous, fiery red hair! Gingers are the orchids of the human race, perfect from root to tip. I am glad that you weren't badly injured and that your husband was able to think on his feet. You have a good man there!

Good luck on packing and hope it sells quickly and at a profit! Where are you moving to? Or are you planning on travelling a bit? Do let me know if you're in Seattle. We have many wonderful bear bars here where you and your husband would likely be adored, and the drinks would be on me!

The offer is appreciated, and at some point I may well take you up on it.

There will be travel, but I'm not sure how soon other that November plans. Our nephew is getting married the weekend prior to Thanksgiving; we're flying out mid-month, & staying until the 30th.

The move is going to be leaving us a tremendous amount of work, renovating the new property. Hopefully by Spring I'll be looking at some travel. I personally love Seattle.
