Envying the Ostrich....

Whilst I have had several friends try to reassure me there remains a place for me in this country, I remain terrified and overwhelmed. We're on a precipice, about to dive headlong into a sharp turn to the right.

The past 24 hours I've had a difficult time watching the news, particularly with regard to the Trump transition team. The names being bandied about make me wonder if I'm in the US of 2016 or the Germany of the mid 1930's. This is not hyperbole.

I told my husband last night, if there are serious threats to our right to be married, I will want to leave the country.

But to where?

Seriously, at this point in our lives as we look at retirement, how can we disentangle our futures from this country?

I am heartbroken about this.

From where I sit, Canada 2016 looks a great deal like Austria 1933.

What people are now asking in Canada is, are we going to be Austria or Poland?

My maternal grandfather was a British subject, & I believe that entitles me to that passport. Similarly, I suspect that would be extended to my wedded spouse. I'm just not certain I want to move to the UK. Depends on whether Brexit actually happens. With their court's recent pronounced opinion that Brexit can only happen if Parliament calls for it, Brexit might be avoided.

I don't have the marriage issue, but I don't see myself as having any practical options; Aus/NZ don't accept immigrants over 50; I have no ties to any country outside the USA that might give me access to a different passport - hell, I don't even have a US passport.
