Rodents...

I used to have a cat, two of them actually. Nathan disappeared 8 years ago while we were away and a close friend was housesitting. Noah did the same thing while we were away for Thanksgiving last year.

We live in a redwood forest. There are wild critters here & more of them in the house at times than I'm happy with. Over the years we've be visited by bats, lizards, humming birds, jays, honeybees, yellow jackets, and a barn owl, inside the house. The last took up roost in the great room for a solid week before finally flying out the door again.

None of those visitors were as disconcerting as rodents. In the past couple of weeks it's become clear the kitchen had become a rodent buffet. I set traps. They ignored them, at least until this week. The remains of a mouse was found yesterday morning in a trap I set Saturday.

Now my right index finger is bruised and smarting; the trap bit me as I was setting it yesterday afternoon. I didn't think it was that much when it happened, but I'm pretty clearly bruised today. I'm ok with this given the trap's effect during the night.

Trap 1. Large grey rat 0.

I've reset the trap. Carefully.

I've had very good luck using part of a Snickers bar as bait. The soft caramel can be pressed deeply into the trigger, and who doesn't like the smell of chocolate?
