Summer has arrived here in Northern California with an avengance. It’s been in the triple digits the last two days and as I sit here on the front porch after b’fast, there’s a layer of smoke wafting over Mt Konocti. Fire season is officially upon us & one is burning roughly 30 miles from here. In a blaze that started late yesterday afternoon in a remote area of this county, some 1500 acres & a dozen homes now lie in ashes.

If you’ve been reading my journal you’re aware that I’ve been clearing brush from my property for the past two months in the hope it will reduce our personal risk for disaster. Currently the remainder of two of the three trees I felled this past week remain to be cut up into either firewood or mulch. There’s a lovely elderly neighbor across the way that still heats with wood. I’m trying to convince her that both the Madrone and the Oak warrent going into her wood pile, rather than my green waste, the fate of the deceased bay tree.

We head off to Santa Rosa this afternoon, a barbecue at Dan and Al’s. It’s a gathering not only of friends, but also of many victims of the Santa Rosa fire storm of last fall. Their home is one of only two that survived the fire in their subdivision. It will be the first time LJ and I have seen the place since the fires and while I’m very much looking forward to seeing Al & Dan, I still have a sense of dread of what I’m going to see there, both with regard to the distruction of the environment just outside their fence, as well as the havoc it’s wreaked on the lives of many of the people who will be there.

After the barbecue we’ll go over to Graton to collect our 16-year-old goddaughter who’s planning to take a bit of summer vacation with us for the next week or two. Perhaps I’ll even have a hand out in the yard, but we shall see.

Political theater still continues to weigh heavy on me. I’m still outraged with the behavior of our current president and his most recent stunts. His use of words like infestation and invasion when he talks about immigrants are so personally offensive that they fill me with rage. He uses the defenseless as pawns towards his own political interests. I’m incredulous that anyone could be so callous towards small children, ordering the separation from their parents, increasing the emotional trauma that these refugee families have already endured. Blaming the opposition publicly for what he ordered Is absurd, and then to go so far as to on stage and in front of cameras, physically embrace the flag was nauseating. His public signing of a presidential order stopping the directive to separate parents from their children at the border is nothing more than an arsonist taking credit for putting out the fire he caused. Further, that several of his administration have used Scripture to justify their actions is unconscionable. Where is excommunication when you need it?

Early this past week, Propublica released a tape recording of several young children in a detention center, crying inconsolably for their parents. Honestly, it left me in tears.

I've been thinking of you again this year as I see all the reports of wild fires in California. I hope that you're safe where you are.
