Just logged on to eBay to check the status of an auction, and thereafter spent 2 minutes on my hands and knees trying to find the contact that popped out, when my eyes bloody well bugged out of my head. I'm simply dumbfounded.

Day before yestereday, I saw a sieve attachment for a Kitchen Aid, which I thought would be nice, especially if I choose to make jams or jellies in the future. The thing would actually serve as a press powered by the mixer. I put in a snipe bid.

Well a little bit ago, I remembered the auction closed at around noon. I'd looked at the item first thing this morning when I checked my email, and upped my snipe bid thought to $72.50. There had been two buyers having a small bidding war. I figured while they were nickle and diming one another, I'd leave a bid roughly $25 higher and just be done with it.

When logging on, I had a bit of buyers remorse, thinking with shipping I would be paying just over $80. Imagine my surpise to find the thing went for $181.38! Two bids, including the winning one came in seconds after mine, which registered 10 seconds before the auction closed. In 10 seconds the price went up over $100.

Now this has to be one happy eBay seller tonight.

And what does it go for if you just buy one at retail?

I always make sure to research what something's really worth, if at all possible, before buying on eBay. I do my very best to avoid getting caught up in an "auction frenzy" and paying way more than something is worth.

Obviously, it's more difficult to figure out what a reasonable price is for collectible items, but it is possible. I got some pretty good deals when I went through my Biker Mice From Mars collector phase. ;) (I still swing through toy stores every now and again and check for new Rescue Heroes figures with good facial hair.)

actually it appears the item is no longer made, so with it off the market, auctions like these are one of the few ways of procuring one.

Ah... so that puts it in a similar category to "collectibles"... whatever the market will bear.
