Well, I finally kept my date with the needle Friday. I finally got my butt into the lab to have blood work done. I've been overdue, and frankly, with all the weight gain from the medication I was taking, I was dreading going in. In order to save some cash, I went with one of the smaller laboratories in town, and went in fasting Friday morning. On the docket was a fasting blood sugar, a lipid panel, a glycohemoglobin, a homocysteine, liver function tests and a CPK, just in case I needed to start something to lower my cholesterol.

I'm rather grateful for my genetics. Diabetics with normal cholesterol and triglycerides are unusual; diabetics with low cholesterol and triglycerides are a rarity. Diabetics with a low cholesterol and triglycerides, on no lipid lowering medication are almost unheard of. The total cholesterol was 119, my triglycerides 109, my LDL 58 and my VLDL 22. My HDL was 39, which technically is low, but in light of the remaining numbers, it's hard to get worked up about it.

My fasting blood sugar was 94, well within the normal range and my glycohemoglobin was 5.5, which also indicates excellent control. The normal range (read nondiabetic range) is 4 to 6%. Even my liver function tests, as well as my homocysteine were normal.

The only bad news is all this, and leave it to me to find some bad news here, is with numbers that look as good as these, getting my insurance company to pay for the Byetta is going to be an uphill battle. I've reached the conclusion that if they refuse to pay for it, I'm still going to continue to use it, which at $203 a month is no small decision. However, it has made such a difference for me, in terms of reduction of my appetite, and maintaining normal numbers despite stopping Actos, I don't really see that I have an alternative.

I'd get my bloodwork done, but I'm scared to. They might tell me that I can't eat any more cheezeburgers!
