Did I really just do that?
Aug. 26th, 2010 09:39 pmI just bought a new computer over the phone.
It's not been a secret that I had been thinking about a new machine for the past 5 months (ever since this one took a 4 week hiatus in March/April), but had not made any substantive moves on this till today.
Sarah's sister Summer (I dare you to say that 5 times quickly) mentioned to me this morning that she'd bought the HP Pavillion dm4 1060 for her daughter (a sophomore at Sonoma State) earlier this week at Office Depot for $200 less than list & $100 less than her husband could on his employee discount directly from HP. Rachel is thrilled with it. The machine has a 500 gig hard drive, an Intel i5-430 processor, plus 4 gigs of RAM. While the 14" screen will be a step down from the 17" I've grown used to, I can get used to a machine that weighs 3 lbs less than my current one, very very easily. Honestly, I hate carting my current machine around due to its weight. With my arthritis in my hands, there are times when I'm afraid I will go all butterfingers and drop the blasted thing.
I hit c/net and the dm4 got a very nice rating earlier this year, so I called Office Depot, where my business has an account and ordered one at the in store price. The website wouldn't let me order one; it said it was an in store deal only. The phone service was able to over ride that, wince I have a business account with them.
So $700 later, a pittance in comparison to the 14" Lenovo I almost ordered last April, I will soon have a new laptop (as in likely next Tues.)
Now the fun will begin, getting to know Windows 7. I wonder how much fun it's going to be moving programs from this machine to that one.
