May. 9th, 2013 01:40 pmMarriage Equality, our right to civil marriage under the law, just passed in the House of Representatives in Minnesota, by a vote of 75-59. 68 votes was what was needed to pass. Now it is on to the Senate. The Minneapolis Star Tribune says that the Senate vote will take place on Monday. Gov. Mark Dayton has pledged to sign the bill, if it comes to his desk, which at this point seems likely.
My uncle went to medical school at the U of M, and after residency came back there to settle, practice and raise a family. I think my first trip to Minneapolis was in 1962. My folks piled us all in the car and pop handed me the AAA map to have me give him directions as we drove from Brooklyn to Minneapolis. (Mom is directionally challenged. Turn her around three times in a paper bag and she's lost. I on the other hand, have an unusually keen sense of direction, even when I was just 7.)
In all my visits to the twin cities, I was always impressed with the warmth and welcome of the place, and honestly, as a young person, it is where I thought I would eventually end up. I even applied to the U of M for med school and in my application I wrote that how soon I relocated to Minnesota, depended on them. Things have obviously not turned out that way, but still I have a soft spot in my heart for the state. While it did give us Michelle Bachmann, if also gave us Eugene McCarthy, Paul Wellstone, and Al Franken. On the whole, more good than bad.
